Curators Alberto Ruiz de Samaniego

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Luis Seoane (Buenos Aires, 1910-A Coruña, 1979), the Fundación Luis Seoane and Sociedad Estatal de Conmemoraciones Culturales SECC have organised this exhibition. It is a selection of pieces from the Fundación’s collection that seeks to offer a comprehensive view of Seoane’s work. Painter, illustrator, writer, designer, publisher and champion of Galician culture in exile, Seoane was able to maintain a consistent ideological and stylistic position throughout his life. This made him and his work one on the pillars of 20th-century Galician culture. He left behind a tremendous legacy, of which this exhibition offers a small glimpse in seven blocks that analyse the periods and influences of his work. Lines and Shapes are pieces which show the influence of the Historical Avant-garde movements; War, Capitalism, Exile and Emigration delves into the artist’s political commitment; Landscapes and Elemental Realities is a selection of his landscapes and still lifes; Daydreams and Mythical Worlds explores the mythical sublimation of the Galician identity; Made-up Beasts are pieces from the bestiaries that Seoane created in the seventies; Design, Creation, Illustration: Literature focuses on his work as a graphic designer and publisher; and finally, Self-portraits, the pieces in which the artist himself is the subject. Luis Seoane. A configuración do posible (Luis Seoane. The Configuration of the Possible) includes samples of the artist’s work as a publisher, a selection of his books, a radio interview where Seoane talks about some aspects of his life and his art; and a timeline of pictures depicting key moments of his life and his work. To close the exhibition, a screening of a documentary directed by José Manuel Mouriño and produced by the Fundación Luis Seoane to celebrate the date.
