Günther Förg. Verfolgen Malerei

German painter and photographer Günther Förg (Füssen [Germany], 1952-Freiburg [Germany], 2013) was one of the most important artists of his generation and, undoubtedly, one of the key figures of European contemporary art until his death in 2013. The name of the exhibition, Verfolgen Malerei (Chasing Painting), is a reference to the hybrid nature of the artist’s work: the meticulous and organised abstraction of his paintings runs parallel to his use of photography as a field for artistic reflection. It also alludes to the sort of pieces included in the exhibition, large-format photograpsh sharing the space with oils, lead, drawings and artist’s books; a selection of fifty pieces on loan from private collectors and public institutions that gives visitors a comprehensive vision of Förg’s work since the late 80s until today.
